First, I just want to address this TS bullshit for a minute here. John Mayer is not writing lyrics as a clues about certain person that will make you think about who is the subject of a song. It’s just not that simple and direct when it comes to his music. He actually respects his fans and expects them to think beyond that and actually take something from his songs and apply it to their lives. There’s no whining or bashing anyone. End of story.
“My job as a writer is to, and I think I’ve done it on this record, take you to your life, not take you to mine. And if the music is good enough, then you almost forget about my life, I can be sort of a con to it, to taking you straight to your life and how my music relates to you. And I think it might be interesting afterthought to people, but I think when the music is playing it’s far too many years of being in condition to listening to music, music that moves you, to ever say like “Stop that for a moment, who’s he talking about?”
And second, I will never understand people who rate music based on a certain style or try to fit it in a box. There’s good music and there’s bad music. You like something or you don’t. And if you do, you shouldn’t be ashamed of it just because it’s called this or that, lame or cool. Who cares about genres? I think it’s great that JM is always trying new stuff, experimenting, evolving. That’s one of the things I love about him. He just doesn’t care about record sales or about what people think. Every album is different and that’s so exciting. Would you seriously want to hear him recreating the same sound on every record? Don’t think so.
“I think I got to a point where I’m really playing music to serve playing music. I’m doing this because it’s my calling. Not because I’m here to show anybody anything.”
word of this, sister. Amen.
